Category L technical inspection requires all motor vehicles with two or three wheels and quadricycles to comply with the inspection if necessary.

But before you panic and make an appointment at a suitable center near you, you should take a look at the schedule planned by the authorities.

What is the technical inspection schedule?

If your motorized two-wheeler, three-wheeler or quadricycle was registered before January 1, 2017, you will be among the first to be affected by the technical inspection of category L. Basically, it is absolutely necessary to verify the inspection pass before December 31, 2024. In this case, it is better anticipate and make an appointment as quickly as possible.

For a vehicle put into service between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019, the first technical inspection must be carried out during 2025.

If your vehicle was registered between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021, the technical inspection does not yet apply to you. Your vehicle will have to undergo a technical inspection during 2026.

Valid for three years

Finally, if your vehicle was put into service after 1 January 2022, you will need to comply with the new rule. It requires a technical inspection within five years of leaving the dealership. For a car, this period is only four years.

In all cases, category L inspection is valid for three years, one year longer than for cars.

Spreading the calendar until 2026 is intended to prevent congestion at technical inspection centers.

What points are checked?

The technical inspection of two-wheelers is an important innovation, it is normal to ask what points will be checked during the inspection of your vehicle. To better prepare you for the transition, here are eight ticked features.

Vehicle identification numbers, braking equipment, steering, visibility, lights, reflective elements and electrical equipment, connection to the ground (axles, wheels, tires, suspension) will be checked.

But also the chassis, other equipment including speed restrictions from June 2025 for the L1e category. Finally, nuisances, including noise emissions, will be controlled from 2025.
