Pedro Rocha, indicted in the corruption scandal that is rocking the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), was named president of the RFEF on Friday. “Pedro Rocha was appointed today as the new president of the Spanish Football Federation after receiving the support of the majority of the assembly of this institution,” the RFEF wrote in a press release.
He was the only candidate in the election for the President of the Federation, which was originally scheduled to take place on May 6, if several people apply. The announcement comes a day after the Spanish government decided to put the Federation under surveillance, in crisis since the forced-kiss scandal of Luis Rubiales, the body’s former president, who Pedro Rocha has acted for since August.
A number of cases on the RFEF
Specifically, the “Supervision, Normalization and Representation Commission” created by the Supreme Sports Council (CSD), an organization dependent on the Ministry of Sports, will exercise “supervision of the RFEF” in the coming months in the “interest of Spain”, the future organizer of the 2030 World Cup together with Portugal and Morocco, announced on Thursday ČSD.
The RFEF, already rocked by the forced kiss scandal of world champion Jenni Hermoso after August’s “Roja” world title that led to the resignation of Rubiales, is now at the center of a corruption investigation in which the former Spanish football powerhouse and Pedro Rocha have been indicted.
The case concerns irregularities in contracts signed by the RFEF over the past five years, during the presidency of Luis Rubiales, including a lucrative deal to relocate the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.
